NEW DELHI: During the last 36 hours about 2,361 people have been evacuated from the city’s Nizamuddin Markaz, associated with a rise in cases of covid-19 across the country, Delhi deputy chief Manish Sisodia said on Wednesday.
Of the 120 cases in Delhi so far, 24 can be traced back to the Markaz.
Jammu & Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Telangana, Andaman & Nicobar, and Andhra Pradesh, among others, have reported a surge in cases of covid-19, especially those who attended the three-day religious meeting organised by the Nizamuddin Markaz in mid-march.
"The entire building of Markaz in Nizamuddin has been evacuated after a 36 hour intensive operation. A total of 2,361 people have been evacuated from the building. From this 617 people have been taken to the hospital and the remaining to quarantine centres," Sisodia said.
The event was held at a time when restrictions had been imposed on coming together of more than 200 people at one location. The Delhi government has asked the Lieutenant Governor to file a case against the maulana of the Markaz for holding the event and flouting social distancing protocol.
"Medical staff, administration, police, Delhi transport corporation staff all worked in this 36 hour operation while putting their own lives at risk. Hats off to all of them," Sisodia added.
State governments across the country have asked those who attended the religious event to come out and get tested. India has so far reported more than 1,600 cases, with death toll at 35.
