Cyclone 'Biparjoy is likely to move nearly northwards during the next twenty four hours and then north-northwestward during the subsequent three days

Very severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ is likely to intensify further in the next two days and advance further over the Arabian Sea, said IMD in its latest report on Thursday.

The weather forecasting agency said that the very severe cyclonic storm east-central Arabian Sea moved north-northwestwards with a speed of 6 kmph during the past six hours.

“The cyclone lay centered at 0230 hours IST of today, the 08th June 2023 over the same region near latitude 13.7°N and longitude 66.0°E, about 865 km west-southwest of Goa, 930 km southwest of Mumbai, 965 km south-southwest of Porbandar and 1250 km south of Karachi," said IMD in its reporter.

It would intensify further gradually during the next 48 hours and move nearly north northwestwards during the next 3 days.

The cyclone will affect monsoon onset over Kerala and weak progress beyond the southern peninsula under its influence. The cyclone will also affect states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala as they will experience high-speed wind.

Latest updates on Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’

-High-speed winds will affect weather in the Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra coasts till June 10. Gale wind can reach a speed of 145-155 kmph gusting to 170 kmph over the central Arabian Sea.

-Storm intensity will start to reduce after 10 June, as gale wind speed will reach 135-145 kmph gusting to 160 kmph over central & adjoining north Arabian Sea on June 11.

-Sea conditions will likely remain harsh till June 10 off the Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra coasts.

IMD issues rainfall alerts for these states due to cyclone ‘Biparjoy’

- IMD has issued a rainfall alert in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh for the next five days.

-Light/moderate fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds very likely over Kerala, Lakshadweep, South Interior Karnataka; isolated to scattered activity over Coastal & North Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh during the next 5 days.

-Andaman and Nicobar will experience heavy rainfall at isolated places on June 10. Kerala will experience heavy rainfall till June 10 and the south interior regions of Karnataka will witness heavy rainfall on June 9 and 10.

-Light or moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning will be experienced in northeastern India for the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam & Meghalaya on 10th June.

Cyclone Biparjoy: IMD issues latest fishermen warning

-IMD has announced the total suspension of fishing activities over east-central and adjoining west-central and south Arabian Sea till 12th June.

-Afterwards, the weather agency advised fishermen to not venture into the central Arabian Sea till 13 June, adjoining areas of the north Arabian Sea from 12th-13th June.

-The cyclone is likely to sustain the strength of a very severe cyclone till June 12.

-Due to the cyclone, the intensity of the monsoon and the onset over Kerala would be ‘mild’

-The weather forecasting agency has not yet predicted any major impact on countries adjoining the Arabian Sea, including India, Oman, Iran, and Pakistan.
