Cyclone Hamoon intensified into ‘severe’ cyclonic storm; IMD warns fishermen to stay ashore

The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid going into the west-central Bay of Bengal until Wednesday, as well as the areas along and off the Odisha coast and the northern Bay of Bengal from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the deep depression in the West-central Bay of Bengal is strengthened into a ‘severe’ Cyclonic Storm.

The Cyclonic storm has been named 'Hamoon' by Iran. The word ‘Hamoon’ is a Persian word that refers to inland desert lakes or marshlands. They are formed as natural seasonal reservoirs in areas adjoining the Helmand basin.

“Cyclonic storm ‘Hamoon’ intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the northwest Bay of Bengal," said IMD.

Senior Scientist of IMD Bhubaneswar, Uma Shankar Das told ANI “Yesterday's deep depression that has moved with a speed of 13 km/hour in the Northeast direction, it is very likely to intensify into a very cyclonic storm in the next 6 hours."

The IMD also issued a warning that sea conditions will remain turbulent until this evening and cautioned fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.

Das said that sea conditions will be rough to very rough till this evening and from tomorrow the sea condition will be very rough to high, fishermen have been advised not to go into the West-central Bay of Bengal till 25th October and the north Bay of Bengal till 26th October."

“It is the time of paddy harvesting, so those people who are harvesting are advised to complete it fast and keep it in a safe place," Das told ANI.

At 5.30 pm, the system was around 230 km off the Paradip coast in Odisha, 360 km south of Digha in West Bengal, and 510 km south-southwest of Khepupara in Bangladesh, it said, adding, “The system is very likely to cross Bangladesh coast, between Khepupara and Chittagong, around 12 pm on October 25 as a deep depression."

Meanwhile, as reported by PTI, the Odisha government has instructed all district collectors to be on standby for any potential situation and has specifically directed the authorities to arrange for the evacuation of individuals residing in low-lying regions in case of heavy rainfall.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the wind speed over the Bay of Bengal will gradually increase to 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph by Tuesday morning, PTI reported.

Weather Update

Odisha received about 15 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours under the influence of the system. Light to moderate rain may continue in the coastal areas on Monday and Tuesday, the weather office said.

“Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) might occur at one or two places in Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur till 8.30 am on Tuesday," it added.
