Cyclone Maha update: Heavy rains expected in some parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra

Gujarat and Saurashtra region will witness heavy to very heavy rainfall in the wake of Cyclone Maha

    Cyclone Maha, after intensifying into extremely severe cyclonic storm on Monday, has weakened into a very severe cyclonic storm, said India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather forecasting agency reports that Cyclone Maha is moving east-northeastwards and gradually weakening. IMD predicted extremely heavy rainfall in the coastal areas of Gujarat — Junagarh, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Surat, Bharuch, Porbandar, Rajkot tomorrow. Heavy damage expected in Gujarat due to Cyclone Maha in this week.

    Moderate to heavy snowfall and rains have been predicted in union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh for three days starting from tomorrow, IMD predicted.

    At 8.30 am today, Cyclone Maha lies over the westcentral and adjoining eastcentral Arabian Sea, about 660 km west-southwest of Porbandar in Gujarat, 720 km west-southwest of Veraval in Gujarat, 770 km west-southwest of Diu. According the IMD, Cyclone Maha is very likely to cross Gujarat coast between Diu and Porbandar as a Cyclonic Storm by November 7 morning. Heavy rainfall accompanied by winds reaching to 90 Kmph are expected.

    Gujarat and Saurashtra region will witness heavy to very heavy rainfall in the wake of Cyclone Maha. In Gujarat, Junagarh, Gir Somnath, Amreli,Bhavnagar, Surat, Bharuch, Anand, Ahmedabad, Botad, Porbandar, Rajkot will receive heavy rains tomorrow. Bhavnagar, Surat, Bharuch, Anand, Ahmedabad, Botad, Vadodara are expected to received heavy shower on Thursday, said IMD.

    In Maharashtra, Madhya Maharashtra and north Konkan (Palghar & Thane districts) will receive 'light to moderate' rainfall with isolated heavy downpour at couple of places.

    Gujarat, Daman, Diu, Dadra & Nagar Haveli: Squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph likely to commence over northeast Arabian Sea along & off Gujarat coast from Thursday morning. Sea condition will be rough will be rough to very rough along and off Gujarat coast from November 6. "Storm surge of about 0.5 – 1.0 meter above Astronomical tide is likely to inundate low lying areas of Bhavnagar, Junagarh, Gir Somnath, Amreli, Surat, Bharuch, Anand, Ahmedabad, Porbandar," IMD said in a press release. There will be a total suspension of fishing operations till November 6.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting today with senior officials where he discussed Cyclone Maha, which is now moving towards the Gujarat coast. Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba on Monday took stock of the preparedness for rescue and relief operations in a meeting with the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC). National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) as well as Coast Guard and Naval ships have been positioned.
