Cyclone Michaung Highlights: Due to intense rainfall and waterlogging in Chennai, Southern Railways announced the cancellation of 15 trains on Thursday, according to officials.

Cyclone Michaung Highlights: In response to severe flooding in the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu on Thursday.

Additionally, educational institutions in six specific taluks—Pallavaram, Tambaram, Vandalur, Thiruporur, Chengalpattu, and Thirukazhukundram—will remain closed on the same day.

Meanwhile, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to arrive in Tamil Nadu on Thursday to assess the prevailing flood situation in the wake of Cyclone ‘Michaung’.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “To help the state Governments with the management of relief necessitated by the cyclonic storm, PM Narendra Modi directed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to release in advance the central share of the 2nd instalment of SDRF of 493.60 to Andhra Pradesh and 450 crore to Tamil Nadu."

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Stalin assessed the areas impacted by Cyclone Michaung and provided essential items, including food and milk, to residents affected by the rainfall in Chennai.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to the families of individuals who lost their lives to Cyclone Michaung.

Cyclone Michaung LIVE: In the aftermath of cyclone Michaung, Lake Puzhal and other reservoirs in Chennai have reached their full capacity.

Water Resources Minister Durai Murugan and Commercial Tax and Registration Minister P Moorthy inspected the Puzhlal Lake in Thiruvallur District on Thursday morning and said that there is nothing to worry about after the inspection.

While speaking with the press, Durai Murugan said, "Take Puzhal, Chembarambakkam or any other reservoirs; those are just built to manage only moderate rainfall. But historically, after 47 years, no one expected this strong cyclone. However, officials took care of everything to mitigate the damage. The inflow of water was very huge and we could only release a small amount of water. The water level should be one and a half feet less than the actual capacity; we have told officials to maintain this. Everything is safe and there is nothing to worry about. There won't be any danger to Puzhal Lake and the residents."

Cyclone Michaung LIVE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to release in advance the second instalment of the Centre's contribution to the SDRF of 493.60 crore to Andhra Pradesh and 450 crore to Tamil Nadu in view of the floods caused by cyclone Michaung, Union Minister Amit Shah said.

In a post on X, Shah said the prime minister has also approved the first urban flood mitigation project of 561.29 crore for 'Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project' under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF), which also includes central assistance of 500 crore.

The severe cyclonic storm Michaung has affected Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Though the extent of damage is varied, many areas of these states have been inundated, affecting standing crops, the minister said.

"To help the state governments with the management of relief necessitated by the cyclonic storm, PM @narendramodi Ji directed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to release in advance the central share of the 2nd instalment of SDRF (State Disaster Response Fund) of 493.60 crore to Andhra Pradesh and 450 crore to Tamil Nadu," he said.

After following the required step process and safety measures, the factory operations have been shut down temporarily, the drug firm said in a regulatory filing.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a post on X said that PM Modi approved Rs. 561.29 crore urban flood mitigation project for Chennai. 

“Chennai is facing major floods, the third such occurring in the last eight years. We are witnessing more instances of metropolitan cities receiving excessive rainfall, leading to sudden flooding. Guided by a pro-active approach, PM Narendra Modi has approved the first urban flood mitigation project of Rs. 561.29 crore for ‘Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project’ under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF), which also includes Central assistance of Rs. 500 crore," Union Home Minister Amit Shah said.

“This mitigation project will help make Chennai flood-resilient. This is the first in a series of urban flood mitigation efforts and will help develop a broader framework for urban flood management," he further added.

Cyclone Michaung Live: IAF air-drops 2300 kg relief material in flood-affected areas of Chennai

As Chennai grappled with the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, the Indian Air Force continued relief operations in the city until sunset on Wednesday.

During the operations, IAF dropped a total of 2,300 kg of relief material in the flood-affected areas.

The IAF was working in liaison with the Tamil Nadu government while the relief materials were being provided by various agencies in the state.

In the early hours of Wednesday, four Chetak helicopters of the IAF carried out air drops in South Chennai from Medavakkam to Puzhudivakkam metro station, covering 8 locations, and in North Chennai from Manali Petro Chemicals through the inner ring road. They dropped Manali fertilisers to Nappalayam at 8 locations. (ANI)

Cyclone Michaung Live: Rains disrupt normal life in Jharkhand

Intermittent rains continued to disrupt normal life in Jharkhand on Thursday, officials said.

Light to moderate rains since Tuesday evening have brought down the state's day temperature, they said.

Ranchi on Wednesday recorded a maximum temperature of 18.4 degrees Celsius, 6.8 notches below the normal. Jamshedpur and Daltonganj recorded a maximum of 23.2 and 20.6 degrees Celsius, respectively, both below the normal.

"The decline in day temperature may continue for the next 24 hours. Thereafter, it may increase gradually, as the impact of the cyclone would reduce after Friday," Ranchi Meteorological Centre in-charge Abhishek Anand told PTI. (PTI)

The Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu on Thursday due to severe flooding caused by Cyclone Michaung.

Here are the latest updates.

As reported by ANI, educational institutions in six taluks, namely Pallavaram, Tambaram, Vandalur, Thiruporur, Chengalpattu, and Thirukazhukundram, will be closed. In the Kundrathur and Sriperumbudur blocks of Kancheepuram, schools and colleges will also remain shut on Thursday. Despite the announced closures in certain areas, schools and colleges in Walajabad and Utiramerur will operate as usual.

Additionally, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to visit Tamil Nadu on Thursday to evaluate the current flood situation following Cyclone Michaung. Cyclone Michaung LIVE: IAF air-drops 2300 kg relief material in flood-affected areas of Chennai

As Chennai grappled with the aftermath of Cyclone Michaung, the Indian Air Force continued relief operations in the city until sunset on Wednesday.

During the operations, IAF dropped a total of 2,300 kg of relief material in the flood-affected areas.

The IAF was working in liaison with the Tamil Nadu government while the relief materials were being provided by various agencies in the state.

In the early hours of Wednesday, four Chetak helicopters of the IAF carried out air drops in South Chennai from Medavakkam to Puzhudivakkam metro station, covering 8 locations, and in North Chennai from Manali Petro Chemicals through the inner ring road. They dropped Manali fertilisers to Nappalayam at 8 locations. (ANI)

Southern Railway cancels 15 train services today amid Chennai rains

As many as 15 trains were cancelled by Southern Railways on Thursday amid heavy rainfall and water logging in Chennai, officials informed.

The railway authorities announced the cancellation of several train services scheduled for December 7, Thursday, including the Chennai Egmore-Tirunelveli Vande Bharat Special and Tirunelveli-Chennai Egmore Vande Bharat Special.

Passengers were advised to take note of the affected trains and plan their journeys accordingly.

The cancelled trains include Dr MGR Central - Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Adaman Express, Dr MGR Central - Vijayawada Vande Bharat Express, Dr MGR Central - Mysuru Vande Bharat Express, Dr MGR Central - Mysuru Shatabdi Express, Dr MGR Central - Coimbatore Kovai Express, Dr MGR Central - KSR Bengaluru Brindavan Express, Dr MGR Central - Tirupati Express, Tirupati - Dr MGR Central Express, Dr MGR Central - Tirupati Express, Tirupati - Dr MGR Central Express, Dr MGR Central - Coimbatore Shatabdi Express, Dr MGR Central - Vijayawada Jan Shatabdi Express, Dr MGR Central - KSR Bengaluru Double Decker Express, Chennai Egmore - Tirunelveli Vande Bharat Special and Tirunelveli - Chennai Egmore Vande Bharat Special, the officials stated through a release.

The authorities further informed that the suburban trains in Chennai Central-Arakkonam, Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu and Chintadripet -Velachery (MRTS) sections would run as per their scheduled timings. (ANI)

Cyclone Michaung LIVE: Schools, colleges closed across 4 Tamil Nadu districts today

The Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu on Thursday due to severe flooding caused by Cyclone Michaung.

As reported by ANI, educational institutions in six taluks, namely Pallavaram, Tambaram, Vandalur, Thiruporur, Chengalpattu, and Thirukazhukundram, will be closed.

In the Kundrathur and Sriperumbudur blocks of Kancheepuram, schools and colleges will also remain shut on Thursday. Despite the announced closures in certain areas, schools and colleges in Walajabad and Utiramerur will operate as usual. Read the story here.
