
Cyclone Michaung Highlights: Cyclone Michaung has weakened into a depression over northeast Telangana, the India Meteorological Department informed on Wednesday.
“Deep Depression (Remnant of Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG”, pronounced as MIGJAUM) weakened into a Depression over Northeast Telangana,” IMD wrote on X.
The cyclone weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area on Wednesday. Despite reduction in its impact, some parts of states like Andhra PRadesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha continued to receive heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Several districts of Tamil Nadu continue to suffer from the flood and water-logging due to heavy rain caused by the cyclone. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Thursday, will visit Tamil Nadu to take stock of the damage caused in the state. He will also meet TN CM MK Stalin.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X, “My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones due to Cyclone Michaung, especially in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. My prayers are with those injured or affected in the wake of this cyclone. Authorities have been working tirelessly on the ground to assist those affected and will continue their work till the situation fully normalises.”
On Tuesday, Cyclone Michaung hit land, causing continuous heavy rainfall in Chennai. Despite the reduced intensity from Monday, the downpour persisted, bringing the state capital to a halt.
The storm-induced floods disrupted daily life, leading to casualties and damage to properties.
On Tuesday, the Greater Chennai police announced in a statement that 17 individuals lost their lives in different incidents as a result of the floods caused by the cyclone in the city.

Food is being distributed to people who are staying in the waterlogged areas.
With the remnants of cyclonic storm Michaung weakening into a depression, Odisha's southern areas received moderate rainfall on Wednesday while the Gajapati district administration announced the closure of all schools due to heavy downpour, officials said.
The remnants of cyclonic storm Michaung weakened into a depression and lay centered at 5.30 AM of Wednesday at about 50 km east-northeast of Khammam, 110 km north-northwest of Gannavaram (Vijayawada) and 250 km southwest of Jagdalpur, the India Meteorological Department said.
The National Weather Agency said the system is likely to continue to move nearly northwards and weaken further into a well-marked low-pressure area during the next six hours. (PTI)

Cyclone Michaung has wreaked havoc in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states. Chennai witnessed some respite as rain stopped on Tuesday but the Tamil Nadu state capital struggled to cope with large scale water logging, power cuts and disruption in mobile networks

Maruti Suzuki India, Mahindra & Mahindra and luxury car maker Audi have extended support to customers in cyclone and flood-affected regions of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
In a statement, Maruti Suzuki India said it has collaborated with its dealer partners and made several arrangements at its workshops.
As soon as the news about the cyclone 'Michaung' was reported, the company proactively sent out 7 lakh SMS alerts containing precautionary steps to its customers to ensure that even before the cyclone hits, customers could take precautionary measures to safeguard their cars against potential damage, it said in a statement. Tamil Nadu has sought an interim relief of ₹5,060 crore from the Centre in connection with the damage caused by Cyclone Michaung, the state government said on Wednesday
With a survey underway to assess the total damage, a detailed report will be prepared later and additional funds sought, an official release here said.
It said Chief Minister M K Stalin has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday seeking grant of interim relief of ₹5,060 crore and that the letter will be handed over to the PM by DMK MP TR Baalu. (PTI)

As Cyclone Michaung continues to wreak havoc in Tamil Nadu, IAF Chetak helicopters have been deployed for flood relief operations in Tamil Nadu's Chennai on Tuesday.
The relief material was dropped in the general area of Adyar and close to Chennai Harbour. Two helicopters were launched in the late evening hours with relief supplies, the Indian Air Force said in a statement. (ANI)
