PremiumCyclone Michaung Highlights: Cyclone Michaung has weakened into a depression over northeast Telangana, the India Meteorological Department informed on Wednesday.
“Deep Depression (Remnant of Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG", pronounced as MIGJAUM) weakened into a Depression over Northeast Telangana," IMD wrote on X.
The cyclone weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area on Wednesday. Despite reduction in its impact, some parts of states like Andhra PRadesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha continued to receive heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Several districts of Tamil Nadu continue to suffer from the flood and water-logging due to heavy rain caused by the cyclone. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Thursday, will visit Tamil Nadu to take stock of the damage caused in the state. He will also meet TN CM MK Stalin.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X, “My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones due to Cyclone Michaung, especially in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. My prayers are with those injured or affected in the wake of this cyclone. Authorities have been working tirelessly on the ground to assist those affected and will continue their work till the situation fully normalises."
On Tuesday, Cyclone Michaung hit land, causing continuous heavy rainfall in Chennai. Despite the reduced intensity from Monday, the downpour persisted, bringing the state capital to a halt.
The storm-induced floods disrupted daily life, leading to casualties and damage to properties.
On Tuesday, the Greater Chennai police announced in a statement that 17 individuals lost their lives in different incidents as a result of the floods caused by the cyclone in the city.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore says, "It is a very sad state of affairs in Chennai because of heavy rains, it has flooded Chennai. The State Government and Municipal Corporation have done their work. There is a lot of inconvenience to the public...I have demanded in the Parliament that we should discuss in the Lok Sabha, the cyclone's effect in Chennai...The Government of India and the ministers must reply what action the Centre has taken to help the states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh."
Cyclone Michaung: Following the rainfall due to the Cyclone Michaung, the Chennai International Airport Authority has declared the airfield open for all arrival and departure operations on Tuesday.

The severe cyclone over the Bay of Bengal is set to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla, in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday morning.
The system was moving in the sea at a speed of 10 kmph and lay centered around 80 km southeast of Nellore, 120 km north-northeast of Chennai, 210 km south of Bapatla and 250 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam at 5.30 pm, the IMD said in its latest bulletin. (PTI)

As the system is nearly moving northwards close to coast, some parts of the wall cloud region lies over land. Likely to move nearly northwards parallel and close to south Andhra Pradesh coast and cross south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla during forenoon of 5th December as a Severe Cyclonic Storm."

Five rain-related deaths were reported in the city, the police said on Monday. Two of the victims died of electrocution while one person was killed after a tree fell on him in the upmarket Besant Nagar area of the city, an official release said. (PTI)

The Railway Ministry has set up an emergency control cell in Chennai and a war room at the Rail Bhawan in New Delhi among various other measures to meet the challenges posed by the cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’.

As many as five people have been killed in separate incidents in Tamil Nadu's Chennai amid heavy rain due to cyclone Michaung, news agency ANI reported, citing an official statement by the Chennai police.

A high-level meeting was held to address the impact of Cyclone Michaung. The East Coast Railway is closely monitoring the situation, conducting patrolling, and providing helpline numbers. So far, 60 trains have been cancelled due to the cyclone, says East Coast Railway CPRO.
