The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Cyclone Mocha is very likely to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm by Thursday midnight over central Bay of Bengal.
“Severe cyclonic storm Mocha lay centered at 2330 hrs IST of 11th May 2023 over southeast adjoining Central BoB near lat 12.7N, long 88.1E, about 510 km west-northwest of Port Blair, 1050 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and 970 km south-southwest of Sittwe (Myanmar),” the IMD twitted.
Earlier, Thursday morning IMD said that the deep depression lying over the Southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a Cyclonic Storm Mocha.
The cyclonic storm ‘Mocha’ is first cyclone of the year in the Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic storm is likely to cross southeast Bangladesh and North Myanmar coasts between Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and Kyaukpyu (Myanmar), close to Sittwe (Myanmar) around noon of 14th May, 2023 as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 150-160 kmph gusting to 175 kmph, the weather agency said.
Indian Coast Guard (ICG) also issued an official statement that its units have been placed on high alert amid the warning of the meteorological department for the cyclonic storm Mocha.
ICG also said a special team has been formed to monitor the preparations and coordinate with civil agencies to mitigate any threat posed by the Cyclonic storm. It has extensively deployed ships and aircraft at sea to broadcast and alert fishing boats and merchant vessels about the Cyclone warning, ICG added.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have also arrived at Digha in West Bengal to ensure preparedness to minimise the impact of the cyclone.
The weather department said most parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next three days in isolated places. It added that the state of Tripura and Mizoram are expected to witness heavy rain showers at isolated places on Saturday and Sunday, while Nagaland, Manipur and south Assam will face intense rainfall in isolated pockets on Sunday.
