The investigative officer probing the Renukaswamy murder case was reportedly changed on Thursday. The development came mere days after Kannada cine star Darshan Thoogudeepa was arrested alongside several aides and remanded to six days of police custody. The killing of a 33-year-old from Chitradurga resident has also taken a political tint in the ensuing days with demands for justice from the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community.

According to reports, Kamakshipalaya police inspector Girish Nayak was transferred on Thursday. His superior — assistant commissioner of police Chandan Gowda — has taken over as the investigation officer.

“Nayak was posted at the Kamakshipalaya station due to the elections. With the model code of conduct no longer in effect, he has been returned to his original station. For continuity, ACP Gowda, who has been overseeing the case, has now been appointed the IO,” a senior police official told Hindustan Times.

Renukaswamy was killed on June 8 and his body was dumped in a stormwater drain within the Kamakshipalya police station limits. Police got to know about the murder when a food delivery boy alerted them about dogs eating the body of a man. Reports quoting sources indicate that Darshan had been furious with his ‘fan’ for sending obscene messages and images to his friend and fellow actor Pavithra Gowda.

“It is a serious case, and officials must conduct a thorough and impartial probe till the accused are punished. No one must behave in an inhumane manner. Whether in power or a celebrity, none have special privileges. All were equal before the law. Taking the law into one's hands was a crime. When it escalates to the level of murder, the case must be taken seriously,” insisted former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

The senior BJP leader called for a rigorous investigation into the alleged involvement of Kannada film actor Darshan Thoogudeepa. He stressed the seriousness of ‘premeditated murder’ and urged for ‘vigour and integrity’ throughout the investigation.
