Delhi Assembly: Police arrest masked driver who breached security, left bouquet in Speaker's car

A masked driver infiltrated the Delhi Assembly by crashing a car through a gate. The driver had left a bouquet near Speaker Vijender Gupta's office. He has now been arrested. This incident raises serious security concerns following prior bomb threats received by the Assembly.

The driver who forced a car through one of the boundary gates of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha premises, leading to a security scare on Monday afternoon, was arrested later in the day.

Two other people have also been detained in connection with the case, a report by news agency PTI has revealed.

The car, which bears a UP registration number, entered the Assembly premises breaking through Gate No. 2 at around 2 PM. The driver of the car had a mask on. The car has now been recovered from the densely populated residential area of Roop Nagar in Delhi.

The driver, who has now been identified as Sarabjit Singh, placed a flower bouquet inside the vehicle of Speaker Vijender Gupta, which was parked near the porch of his office, before he fled from the scene.

"It is too early to comment on the motive behind the entire incident. Our teams are questioning him. Motive is not clear. But we are investigating the entire matter from every possible angle," a police official told the agency, adding that

A Delhi Secretariat official told PTI, “The driver proceeded towards the office of Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta and placed a flower bouquet near the porch before retreating.”

The official also said that this is being considered as a major security breach and has raised serious security concerns.

Security officials who were present at the scene did try to intercept the car but the driver managed to escape. A search operation was been launched to trace the vehicle.

An eyewitness spoke to news agency ANI, where they revealed that the car was white in colour.

"I saw a white car. It hit the gate and entered the Delhi Assembly. The car was being driven inside for around 5 minutes. After a security personnel ran towards the car, he rushed it and came outside the Assembly...," the person told ANI.

The police launched a search for a white Tata Sierra car bearing a UP registration number belonging to the 26A series. A forensic team also visited the Delhi Assembly to collect evidence. Nothing suspicious was found in the bouquet.

Is Sarabjit unwell?

The family members of Sarabjit Singh have claimed that he is unwell, although not specifying the exact nature of his ailment. He originally hails from Pilibhit and has been missing from his home for five days (since 1 April). Sarabjit went to Bareilly on 2 April and arrived in Delhi on Monday, a report by ANI has revealed.

Sarabjit did not inform his family about his travel plans. They have revealed that Sarabjit's behaviour becomes uncontrollable during periods of illness, and that he does not listen to anyone during such times.

This incident comes in the wake of a bomb threat the Delhi Assembly had received during the recently concluded budget session.

Delhi Assembly bomb threats

The bomb threat was sent to the Delhi Assembly on 25 March via an email. It led to an immediate search operation by authorities. The message had claimed that around 16 IEDs (improvised explosive devices) made using RDX were planted in the Delhi Assembly premises.

Bomb threats was also sent to the Assembly on 24 and 26 of March and athe matter was notified to the police commissioner, as per Speaker Vijender Gupta.

Gupta said that the police have been requested to investigate the matter without laxity.

It was Gupta who received some of the threatening emails, which were addressed to him personally from different outfits. In the wake of the bomb threats, the Delhi Assembly Secretariat was also directed to ensure there is adequate CCTV surveillance of the premises and that to make sure that a computerised entry system is used at the entraces of the Assembly.

However, despite these measures, the perpetrator on 6 April was able to enter the Assembly premises by breaking through Gate No 2 on Monday. This time also, it was the Speaker in focus as the masked man placed the bouquet outside Gupta's office.
