Delhi Elections 2025: Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi resigned from the post of Delhi chief minister on Sunday. Atishi, who retained her Kalkaji seat, handed over her resignation to Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena at Raj Niwas, reported PTI citing officials.
Atishi's resignation as Delhi CM comes a day after the AAP faced a crushing defeat in the Delhi Assembly Elections. Apart from Atishi and Gopal Rai, most of the AAP's top leaders, including former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, etc., lost the elections.
After receiving accepting Atishi's resignation from CM post, Delhi LG VK Saxena dissolved the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The order to dissolve present legislative assembly will come into effect from 08th February, 2025.
So far, there has been no confirmation about the Delhi CM face. According to media reports, BJP's winning candidate from New Delhi Parvesh Verma may be one of the most favoured pick of BJP's top leadership for Delhi CM post.
The party is expected to stake claim to power next week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from a foreign visit, party leaders said.
Atishi took oath as chief minister in September last year after AAP convenor and her predecessor Arvind Kejriwal resigned from the post amid corruption allegations against him.
Parvesh Verma on Sunday defeated AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday from New Delhi constituency. The BJP leader achieved a stupendous victory over AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal from New Delhi by 4,089 votes.
The Bharatiya Janata Party returned to power in Delhi after more than 26 years after defeating Arvind Kejriwal's AAP. The party won 48 of the 70 assembly seats. The AAP won 22 seats while the Congress drew a blank in the polls held on February 5.
