NEW DELHI : The four death row convicts in the December 2012 gang-rape and murder case will finally be executed at 5.30am on Friday.

For the first time, Tihar Jail, South Asia’s largest prison complex, will execute four convicts on a single day.

Mukesh Kumar Singh, 32, Pawan Gupta, 25, Vinay Sharma, 26, and Akshay Kumar Singh, 31, will be hanged till death. The Patiala House court on 5 March had issued the fourth and final death warrant.

“Finally the convicts will be hanged. Now I will get peace," Asha Devi, mother of the victim, told Press Trust of India. “My daughter’s soul will now rest in peace."

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed both petitions—while Mukesh had claimed to be a juvenile at the time of the crime, Akshay had challenged the order rejecting his mercy petition.

A bench of Justices R. Banumathi, Ashok Bhushan and A.S. Bopanna, while dismissing Mukesh’s plea, said: “All your remedies are over, review, curative, mercy—all rights have been exercised. How can you now come and say that some documents were not placed on record?"

The bench also held that no ground was made out in Akshay’s plea for judicial review of the decision rejecting the mercy petition.

The additional sessions court in Delhi, too, dismissed the application filed by Vinay, Pawan and Akshay for a stay on their execution on Thursday.

Advocate A.P. Singh, representing the convicts, mentioned a slew of pending legal proceedings, which were filed by the convicts, to seek a stay on the executions. While Pawan had filed a criminal complaint against Tihar jail authorities alleging torture, Akshay’s wife had filed for a divorce plea and Vinay had challenged the order rejecting his mercy petition. Besides, three convicts had also moved the International Court of Justice, seeking a stay on their execution.

Of the six people convicted in the gruesome rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, one was a juvenile and, therefore, was released after serving his term in a juvenile home. The other, Ram Singh, had allegedly committed suicide in jail.
