Delhi High Court on Wednesday restrained over 100 "rogue" websites from streaming animation films 'SpiderMan: Across The Spider-Verse' and 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse'. The court order came after Sony Pictures Animation Inc filed a lawsuit in the high court claiming to hold the copyrights of the upcoming release 'SpiderMan: Across The Spider-Verse'. The film is officially scheduled to be released on 1 June.
In its lawsuit, the company stated that it has not given licensed rights to anyone to broadcast the animated films.
"Defendants 1 to 101, as well as all others acting on their behalf, are restrained from posting, streaming, reproducing.. to the public, on their websites, or through the internet, in any manner whatsoever, any cinematograph work/content/program in which the plaintiff has copyright, including the films 'Spider-Man: Across The Spider Verse' and ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’," Justice C Hari Shankar ordered and also issued the summons.
In the ex parte interim order delivered on 29 May, the judge observed that the copyrights of the plaintiffs are "in the process of being infringed and violated by the Defendants 1 to 101" which qualify as rogue websites.
The judge also asked the Department of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to direct the internet service providers to block access to these websites.
'SpiderMan: Across The Spider-Verse' is a much-awaited sequel to the 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson the film revolves around the rescue of Spider-people of every universe.
