Delhi reports lowest air pollution levels in 2023 during 8-year period, marking significant improvement
The Air Quality Index data reveals that Delhi has recorded its lowest average AQI during the current year, excluding 2020, when the city experienced a significant reduction in pollution levels due to the lockdown measures
PremiumNew Delhi: Delhi has reported its best air quality during the current year from January to May, compared to the same period over the past seven years, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This achievement comes despite the exceptions of the very low anthropogenic, industrial, and commercial activities in 2020 due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) data reveals that Delhi has recorded its lowest average AQI during the current year, excluding 2020, when the city experienced a significant reduction in pollution levels due to the lockdown measures. The improvement in air quality is a positive sign for the city, which has been grappling with severe pollution for many years.
In terms of particulate matter concentration, 2023 has witnessed the lowest levels of both daily average PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations compared to the corresponding period of the previous seven years, with the exception of 2020. This decline in particulate matter pollution indicates a significant reduction in harmful airborne particles that pose a risk to human health.
Additionally, Delhi has experienced a remarkable increase in the number of “Good" to “Moderate" air quality days during the first five months of 2023, compared to the same period in the previous years, excluding 2020. The city has witnessed 74 such days, marking a positive shift in air quality conditions.
Conversely, the number of days with “Poor" to “Severe" air quality has significantly decreased in 2023 compared to the same period in the past seven years, excluding 2020. The city has experienced a 42.10% reduction in such days, with 77 days recorded this year, down from 133 in 2016.
