The mercury in Delhi touched 46 degrees Celsius on Monday, as a blistering heatwave swept parts of the national capital. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that similar conditions are expected on Tuesday and rains are likely to bring some relief from Wednesday. The heatwave stretched the limit of power grids in the capital and posed challenges for outdoor workers like laborers, gig workers, etc.

The Safdarjung Observatory, which serves as Delhi's main weather station, registered a high temperature of 43.7 degrees Celsius, which is four degrees higher than the average and the highest recorded this year. In Najafgarh, the temperature reached a scorching 46.2 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest location within the capital.

Narela, Pitampura, and Pusa also experienced heatwave conditions, with temperatures reaching 45.3 degrees Celsius, 45.8 degrees Celsius, and 45.8 degrees Celsius, respectively.

According to the IMD, the conditions of the heatwave are met when the temperatures reach at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, at least 37 degrees Celsius in coastal areas, and at least 30 degrees Celsius in hilly regions and the departure from the normal temperature is more than 4.5 degrees Celsius.

Rains expected from Wednesday

Western disturbances currently active on the Himalayan hills and are expected to bring rain, hailstorm, and gusty winds to the capital from Wednesday, the IMD said on Monday. The maximum temperature is expected to drop to 36 degrees Celsius.

As a result of the scorching heat, the peak power demand in Delhi surged to 6,532 MW at approximately 3:30 pm. This represents an increase from 6,011 MW, which was recorded around 11:30 pm on Sunday, according to officials.

Last summer, the city's peak power demand reached 7,695 MW, and it is projected to potentially reach 8,100 MW this year, as stated by the officials.
