NEW DELHI: Tension continued to grip northeast Delhi as violence against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, claimed 20 lives and injured around 189. After three days of clashes, Delhi police has started clearing protestors off Jaffrabad, Maujpur-Babarpur and Gokulpuri areas.

“Protesters have left the Jaffarabad metro station and Maujpur Chowk is also clear. Now, 66 Futa Road is absolutely clear of all protests," Delhi Police Special Commissioner Satish Golcha said.

Amid heightened violence in the capital, Union home minister Amit Shah, late on Tuesday, held a three hour-long meeting with officials of his ministry. Meanwhile, 70 companies of paramilitary troops and Delhi police got into action at Chand Bagh, Seelampur and Trilokpuri areas.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Wednesday said stations in these areas, which were shut down for the past three days, have resumed operations.

“No chances are being taken. Tight security remains in place so that violence does not flare up. Contrary to reports, no shoot at sight orders had been issued by the Centre or by the Delhi police. The home minister is keeping a strict on eye on any developments here," said a senior Union home ministry official.

The injured are being treated at the capital’s Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. Officials said four more people were brought dead today morning.

Clashes broke out Sunday evening between pro and anti-CAA groups near Jaffrabad in northeast Delhi, after a large number of people who were protesting against the law blocked a road. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kapil Mishra demanded that anti-CAA protests should be ended by the police at the earliest.

Violence intensified during Monday and Tuesday as Hindu and Muslim groups clashed in these areas, setting ablaze shops and vehicles, along with heavy stone-pelting at the police and paramilitary troops.
