Weather update: No respite for Delhiites, mercury likely to touch 42 degrees today

IMD has predicted strong surface winds during the day today, and the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 42 and 24 degrees Celsius respectively.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a sharp rise in temperature over this weekend in Delhi. The city recorded 40.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 23.2 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season’s average.

The weather office has also predicted strong surface winds during the day today, Sunday and the maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 42 and 24 degrees Celsius respectively.

Kuldeep Srivastava, an IMD scientist said that the upcoming western disturbance may bring rain on May 23 and 24.

The current episode of heatwave will impact pockets of south Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, and north Madhya Pradesh from Saturday to next Tuesday, May 20-23, the weather forecasting agency stated. 

In its recent notification, IMD has predicted a rise in its temperature by 2-4 degree celsius over northwest India during the next 4 days and a fall by 2-4 degrees thereafter. In states located in Central India like MP and UP, temperature will rise gradually by 2-3 degree Celsius during the next 3 days and there will be no significant change thereafter over central India and Maharashtra.

States witnessing heatwave like condition between 19-23 May

-Heatwave conditions in isolated pockets are very likely over south Uttar Pradesh during the 20th and 22nd of May.

-In West Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh, heat wave-like conditions will prevail on 20-21 May.

-In Jharkhand and Chattisgarh, the temperature will rise during 21-23 May 2023.

-In Odisha, temperature will rise significantly during 20-24 May.

-States like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other Konkan regions will experience highly humid air and high temperature. This will lead to hot and humid weather in these areas in the next five days.

Heatwave condition is declared in the plains where the local mercury levels are expected to cross the 40-degree Celsius mark. Moreover, the temperature rise by 5-6 degree Celsius above the region's normal temperatures.
