Delhi-Mumbai airfares soar to ₹14,000, ranking among the world's highest

24-hour advance purchase airfare for non-stop Delhi-Mumbai flight is one of the highest domestic fares globally, despite devalued rupee. Last-minute fares on the busiest domestic routes in the US, UK, Australia, China, South Korea, and South Africa are comparatively lower.

The cost of a 24-hour advance purchase airfare for a non-stop flight from Delhi to Mumbai, which is currently priced at approximately 14,000, is considered one of the highest domestic fares globally.

Even with a devalued rupee, passengers traveling from India will discover that last-minute fares on the busiest domestic routes in countries like the US, UK, Australia, China, South Korea, and South Africa are comparatively lower.

Earlier on Wednesday, Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said airfares on certain routes from Delhi have been considerably reduced by 14% to 61% following the airlines' advisory group meeting held on June 6.

Scindia explained that airlines have the authority to determine airfares and various factors which are taken into account including market dynamics and season. The aviation industry employs an algorithm for pricing decisions.

"The airlines have been given rights to fix airfares which are market controlled. The aviation market in the country is season based. The rates are also fixed accordingly. If capacity is low and demand is high and input costs are not reduced, then rates will be high. There is an algorithm to decide the fare," he said.

Meanwhile, spot airfares continue to trend higher on several routes across India as the domestic civil aviation industry struggles to fill a capacity void caused by the suspension of Go First flights more than a month ago, data from online travel portals showed.

“Air fares are expected to remain higher than those in pre-covid times by over 30-40%," Jay Bhatia, board of directors, Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH), said.

Spot fares on the Delhi-Leh route currently cost around 7,000 from 6,000 in the last week of April. Similarly, Delhi-Srinagar flights are priced at about 12,000 now, up from nearly 9,000 in last week of April. Despite the unusually high air fares, the domestic aviation market continues to experience a surge in passenger numbers.

Indian airlines carried around 13.2 million domestic passengers in May, surpassing the previous record of 13.02 million in December 2019. Domestic air traffic in May marked a 15% rise from the year-ago period and more than 2% increase from April.

Although Delhi-Mumbai is considered India's busiest domestic route, Brazil experiences even higher domestic fares. In Brazil, the 55-minute flight between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro holds that distinction.

On Monday, the cheapest available fare for travel within 24 hours on this route was 26,800. Conversely, in other countries, the last-minute fares on their busiest domestic routes were priced lower than the fares for the Delhi-Mumbai route.
