As the coronavirus cases in the country inches towards 650-mark, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a slew of measures to help the COVID-19 warriors. Every doctor, healthcare worker dealing with coronavirus pandemic, will get a ₹50 lakh insurance cover, Sitharaman announced today.
The central government directed the states to use district mineral fund for COVID-19 medical expenses, said Finance Minister. The state government will use district mineral fund for medical screening, facilities and health needs amid coronavirus outbreak, she added.
Nirmala Sitharaman also announced a package of ₹1.7 lakh crore under the Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan scheme. Earlier, the Centre extended the deadline for filing income tax returns. Individuals have time till June 30 to file the returns. Debit card holders can withdraw cash free of charge from any other bank ATMs for the next three months.
Meanwhile, the country is under three-week lockdown to prevent coronavirus spread. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country has surged to 649 today, with new deaths reported from Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir.
Delhi government on Wednesday directed administration and police to take stern action against landlords and house owners if they force doctors, paramedical staff and health care personnel to vacate their rented residences amid coronavirus pandemic.
There were some reports that some doctors combatting deadly coronavirus disease were asked to leave their rented homes in the national capital. Some doctors in temporary residences had been forcefully evicted by their landlords over infection fears, the Resident Doctor's Association of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi told Reuters.
