Controversy has arisen in Greater Noida as a residents' welfare association (RWA) issued a notice advising residents against wearing "lungis and nighties" within the society premises. The notice, circulated on social media, has drawn criticism from residents of other housing societies who view it as an infringement on personal choices and an attempt to police attire.
The RWA of Himsagar Society in Phi-2, Greater Noida, released the notice titled "Dress code for walking in the premises of the society" on June 10. In the notice, residents were urged to be mindful of their conduct and dress while moving within the society to avoid objections from others. The specific request was made for residents not to wear lungis and nighties, which are typically considered home attire.
According to CK Kalra, the RWA president, the guidelines were introduced following complaints from some female residents. Initially, verbal requests were made, but the decision was ultimately made to issue a circular. Kalra stressed that the intention was to request compliance rather than enforce fines or penalties.
Opinions among society residents vary regarding the notice. Some individuals, like Rukmani Singh, perceive no issue with the dress code request, stating that they have not observed residents wearing lungis or nighties within the premises.
“I personally have never seen any of the residents roaming the premises in a lungi or nightie,” the Hindustan Times quoted her as saying.
However, Devender Tiger, president of the Federation of RWAs in Greater Noida, disagrees with the concept of imposing a dress code in residential societies. Tiger believes that such regulations are unnecessary, as residential societies are not educational institutions requiring such measures.
Similarly, Rajiva Singh, president of the Noida Federation of Apartment Owners Association (NOFAA), emphasises the importance of respecting individual choices and avoiding restrictions on clothing that may clash with cultural or religious sentiments.
