Odisha Train Accident: Coromandel Express train derailed and then collided with a goods train near Bahanaga station in Odisha's Balasore district on Friday, injuring at least 600 people. Reports suggest that at least 55-60 people have been killed and many more passengers are feared injured in the collision. The administration has launched a search and rescue operation.
Several coaches are reported to have derailed, according to CPRO Southern Railway. The accident happened around 7.20 pm near Bahanaga Bazar station when the train was on the way to Chennai Central station from the Shalimar station near Kolkata, the officials said.
The state government directed the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action (ODRAF) Force to assist in rescue operations.
Videos of the Coromandel Express train accident are being shared on the social media. Some videos show bodies lying around as personnel and locals navigate to search and rescue passengers of the train.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has directed the state minister, Pramila Mallik, and Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) to reach the accident site immediately.
The Special Relief Commissioner Office said that the Collector of Balasore is directed to reach the spot of the accident where the Coromandel Express train derailed and collided with a goods train and make all necessary arrangements.
