Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the 'Fit India Movement' and said the initiative, which is the need of the hour, will lead the country towards a healthy future.

"Fitness has always been an integral part of Indian culture. People are nowadays indifferent about their fitness issues. Some decades ago, people would walk around 8 to 10 kilometers every day and do cycling and run regularly. Due to advent of technology physical activity has reduced," Modi said. Interestingly, the same technology would tell us that we are not walking enough, he added.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and this year's National Sports Awards winners attended the event that included presentation of India's indigenous martial art forms, dance and sports.

"We will take this movement to new heights with the cooperation of my fellow Indians. I am so glad that this movement is being launched on the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, our hockey wizard," Rijiju said.

The Prime Minister congratulated the winners of the national sports awards and lauded India's sporting achievements.

“Pick any sports such as Boxing, badminton, tennis or any sport, our athletes are giving new wings to our aspirations. Their medals are not just a result of their hard work but also a reflection of a new India's confidence," Modi said.

In his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address last week, the Prime Minister had asked people to take part in the 'Fit India Movement', being organised to celebrate the 'National Sports Day'.
