Former French Open and Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza got engaged to a man who asked for a selfie as a fan during her visit to New York in August 2021.

Garbine Muguruza has announced that she is getting married to her long-time partner, whom she met in unusual circumstances during a chance encounter captured in a selfie.

As per a report by Mirror, despite her triumphs at major tennis tournaments, the 29-year-old Spanish player has faced a decline in her rankings in recent years. "My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk," Muguruza explained. “I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says, 'Good luck at the US Open.' I was left thinking, 'Wow, he's so handsome.'"

Borges works as a model and was in New York to work for the top-end label Tom Ford. He has over 10,000 followers on Instagram but was star-struck by Muguruza, who was still ranked No. 3 in the world at the end of 2021.

Muguruza and Borges started dating and, nearly two years later, Borges proposed to Muguruza in Marbella, Spain. Muguruza shared the news of their engagement with her 881,000 Instagram followers, posting a photo of the couple along with the caption: "You had me at 'Hello'."

Speaking about the proposal, she added: "It felt weird. I was thinking something else and then when he proposed I started crying. I didn't know how to react. I said yes in the midst of tears, it was very romantic."

No date has been set yet, but the couple plan on getting married near the beach in the near future.

Muguruza, originally from Venezuela, represents Spain in tennis and finds a strong connection with her soon-to-be husband due to his background. While he was born in Spain but raised in Finland, Muguruza sees a similarity between them as they both embody a mix of cultures. "He's a mix, like me. I'm half-Venezuelan and half-Spanish, so we understand each other," he said. "We share that feeling of being citizens of the world."

With only four matches played in 2023, Muguruza's standing in the WTA rankings has fallen to No. 168. Following her defeat to Czech teenager Linda Noskova in the first round of the Lyon Open in February, Muguruza made the decision to take a break from professional competition.
