In the last decade, a few developments have marked significant turning points for the global technology landscape. One such major crossing point for American multinational technology conglomerate Alphabet Inc was when Indian-American business executive Sundar Pichai took over as the company's chief executive officer (CEO) and its subsidiary Google in 2015.

Pichai's extraordinary leadership and strategic decisions have fuelled the growth of the tech giant and expanded its product portfolio, shaping the way we interact with technology. As Pichai turns 51 today, here's how Google has flourished under his tenure.

Google has weathered criticism from President Trump and other leading conservative voices who have alleged that it exhibits an anti-conservative bias under Pichai's leadership. He has led Google's transformation from a search engine giant into a diversified tech powerhouse, focusing on modern-day innovation as well as user-centric products.

Pichai led the launch of successful products such as Google Home, Pixel smartphones, Chromecast, and the Google Cloud Platform, solidifying Google's presence across various industries.

A native of Chennai, India, Pichai grew up alongside his family in a two-room apartment, without a television or car. His family did not own a telephone until Pichai was 12. He went on to study metallurgical engineers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur.

Pichai had revealed a few years ago that he and his family would sleep on the living room floor of their house. "We would sleep on the living room floor. There was a drought when I was growing up, and we had anxiety. Even now, I can never sleep without a bottle of water beside my bed," Pichai had told The New York Times in an old interview.

After IIT Kharagpur, Pichai earned an initiation to study materials science at Stanford University in California, according to reports. "My father spent the equivalent of a year's salary on my plane ticket to the US so I could attend Stanford. It was my first time ever on a plane," Google CEO Sundar Pichai was quoted as saying in an earlier interview to a media house.

After graduating from Standford, he went to Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania to pursue an MBA. Pichai was named Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar, respectively at the university.
