Google Doodle on Tuesday celebrated Croatia's statehood day. The national holiday occurs on 30 May every year in Croatia on this day. In 191, the country declared its independence from Yugoslavia. Until 2020, Croatia celebrated its statehood day on 25 June but the governemnt changed the law on national holidays and moved this to 30 May. Croatia's first democratically elected multi-party Parliament was constituted on 30 May 1990.
On 25 June 1991, the Croatian Parliament declared itself independent from former Yugoslav republics. The country's independence from Yugoslavia was preceded by a referendum held on 19 May 1991 where 94% of the citizens voted for a separate country.
The occasion involves speeches by the Croatian president, the Prime Minister, and other dignitaries, as well as commemorating the Croatian War of Independence.
The commemoration usually begins at the Mirogoj City Cemetery in Zagreb. Croatian president, Prime Minister, and other ministers lay wreaths and lit candles in front of the Central Cross of Croatian War veterans.
After the ceremony at Mirogoj, a Holy Mass for the Croatian homeland is served.
