Government survey shows 2.2% Indians have disability

NEW DELHI : Around 2.2% Indians have some disability, a survey report by the National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has revealed.

The report also pointed out that 21.8% persons with disabilities received aid or help from government and over 1.8% received aid/help from organisations other than the government.

A small number of 28.8% disabled reported during the survey that they had a certificate of disability.

A total of 1,06,894 people, comprising 74,946 in rural areas and 31,948 in urban areas -- were surveyed during July 2018 to December 2018 as part of the 76th round of National Sample Survey (NSS).

The report said over 2.3% in rural and 2.0% in urban areas were disabled and prevalence of disability was higher among men than women. Among men, prevalence of disability was 2.4% while it was 1.9% among women.

The government aimed to estimate indicators of incidence and prevalence of disability, cause of disability, age at onset of disability, facilities available to the persons with disability, difficulties faced by persons with disability in accessing/using public building/public transport, among others.

According to the survey, 3.7% persons with disabilities live alone, while 62.1 % have care givers.

As far as education among 7 years and above was concerned, over 52.2% disabled were literate.

Highlighting the need for more educational programmes for disabled, the survey said among persons with disabilities of age 3 to 35 years, only 10.1% attended pre-school intervention programme.

When it came to labour force participation rate among 15 years and above, 23.8% disabled were found to be employed.

The survey considered persons with disability as those with long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairment.
