New Delhi: Quality is the paramount demand of modern-day customers, with no issue being more crucial to consumers than quality, Union Minister for Commerce, Consumer Affairs and Food Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday.

During the 44th ISO COPOLCO Plenary held in New Delhi, the minister highlighted the significance of quality in meeting consumer expectations and shaping India’s future.

In his inaugural address, Goyal emphasized that consumer satisfaction, safety, and rights are all reliant on the provision of high-quality products and services. He underscored the importance of meeting consumers‘ intrinsic need for quality to ensure their contentment. Recognizing the highly globalized and technology-driven world, Goyal stressed the vital role of quality in the present context.

The minister further emphasized that consumer protection is an integral part of governance. He highlighted the recognition of this concept in ancient texts such as Atharvaveda and Arthashastra, and the government’s aim to revive this consciousness in contemporary times.

Goyal expressed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes consumers play a significant role in the economy, leading the government to prioritize both consumer prosperity and consumer protection, with a focus on establishing a responsive administration.

He said that issues of affordability, practicality and complementarity are also important in making policies for consumer protection. He expressed his firm belief about the Department of Consumer Affairs holding great significance, because every resident of India is a consumer and said that the Department of Consumer Affairs and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) can play a game changing role in making India achieve greater heights.

Goyal reflected on the government’s nine-year journey under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of governance quality. He highlighted the central role of a “Happy and Satisfied Consumer" in the growth of Indian businesses, international trade, and attracting investments.

Goyal said that quality and consumers will play a crucial role in shaping the markets and drive economic growth. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, the Minister said,“The customer is the most important visitor on our premises, and we’re dependent on them.“ He said that the businesses must reflect on the demands of the time and expectations of the customers.

The minister said that India today is the 5th largest economy in the world and in the next few years, India is poised to become the 3rd largest economy. Goyal emphasized upon the huge talent pool and skills which are India’s strength. He said that India is a ‘bright spot’ under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is recognised by the world leaders and the multilateral institutions and almost every developed country wants to trade with India.
