The union health ministry has rushed a team of doctors to support Manipur’s public health efforts, the government said on Wednesday.
“Six teams of doctors, with four doctors each specializing in surgery, psychiatry, medicine, obstetrician & gynecology, pediatric, urology and emergency care will support the state to provide health facilities, that have been adversely impacted due to the ongoing strife in the State," said the health ministry in a statement.
The team of doctors consists of AIIMS Kalyani, AIIMS Guwahati and Northeastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIMS) Shillong respectively.
The decision has been taken under the direction of Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has deployed several teams of doctors to Manipur with immediate effect.
The violence in Manipur erupted on May 3, after thousands of people from tribal groups protested plans to give the majority Meitei community protected status as a Scheduled Tribe, asserting that the community already enjoys advantages in the state.
Amid rising tensions in the state, the union home minister Amit Shah appealed for peace in an attempt for reconciliation between ethnic communities.
