NEW DELHI: : Nearly a fortnight after union home minister Amit Shah met representatives of the Panchayat in Kashmir, in New Delhi, plans are afoot for the home ministry to extend an insurance coverage of upto ₹4 lakh to the sarpanchs in the region.
The discussions come in the wake of the Centre’s decision to dilute Article 370, last month, following which the panchayat members flagged concerns of threats from terrorists operating in the region.
While the ministry had, earlier this month, decided that every sarpanch in Jammu and Kashmir would get police security and an insurance coverage of ₹2 lakh each, the amount is now likely to be revised, an official familiar with the development said.
Shah had also discussed with the delegation that the demand for increasing the honorarium of those holding the post of sarpanch and panch would be considered by the ministry.
At the same time, as part of the Centre’s outreach programme following the dilution of Article 370 and the clampdown in the valley, Amit Shah will also be addressing a “jan arogya abhiyaan" in Mumbai, on Sunday.
