NEW DELHI: Working from home isn’t as easy as it seems. It can be distracting and at times overwhelming. Making the most of the time you get to work is the key. Here are some simple tricks in Windows 10 operating system that can save up a bit of your time.
Using the same PC for work and personal tasks can be confusing, especially when one has to find apps that are specific to each platform. That is where Windows 10’s virtual desktops tool can come in handy. One can create a new virtual desktop by clicking on the icon next to search tab on the taskbar followed by clicking on new desktop button on top of the page. Once separate desktops are created, one can toggle between them by pressing Windows+Ctrl+ right/left arrows.
Getting to previous tasks quickly
It is very common to go back to previous tasks or apps that one may have closed earlier in the day for reference or other work-related tasks. Finding the specific file can be a bit tricky if one doesn’t remember the file name. Windows 10 has a cool multi-tasking tool called Timelines which can help users find previous task and resume work.
Accessible by pressing Windows +Tab, Timelines shows all previous activities be it a webpage in Edge browser, a file in an Office 365 app opened or accessed over the course of the day. Every activity also shows the time when they were closed.
Copying and pasting made easier
Copying and pasting is one of the oldest tricks in the book to get things done faster. For instance, instead of writing an email from scratch which may have content that has been sent before, one can save time by simply copying pasting it.
Windows 10 has a clipboard page which can make copy/pasting the same text multiple times a lot easier. Accessible by pressing Windows +V, the clipboard page shows every text that has been copy-pasted on the PC with the option to pin the text that needs to be shared frequently.
While working one has to keep in touch with other team members. Sharing files, sending emails or making a Skype call frequently with specific contacts is common. Windows 10 makes sharing files a lot easier by letting users pin their favourite contacts on the taskbar.
This saves the need to go to particular email or calling client. One can click contact icon in taskbar and chose to send an email or chat on Skype from there only. One can also share a file by dragging and dropping it on the pinned contact’s icon. To enable this feature one has to go to People and select find and pin contacts.
Search made easy
The search feature in Windows 10 is no longer limited to just enabling search. It serves as a quick file manager of sort letting users see their recent files across categories such as apps, documents, web, email, folder, people music, photos and videos. It can also let users start a search on weather, news or simply typing a keyword in the search bar.
Control notifications better
To avoid getting distracted by not so important notifications while working on PC, Windows 10 has a feature called Focus Assist. It allows users to choose which notification they would like to see. Rest of the notifications will be sent to action centre where one can access them later. Users can choose the time when they want Focus Assist to be active. This feature can be enabled in Focus Assist page by clicking on the Priority option.
