NEW DELHI : The 17th edition of the two-day Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS) began today in New Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivering the inaugural address. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla and Netflix's founder and CEO Reed Hastings will among the other key speakers during the event. Swimming champion Michael Phelps, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, actors Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, among others, will also speak their minds during the summit.

The theme for this year’s summit is ‘Conversations for a Better Tomorrow’.

Highlights from PM Modi's speech:

-There are a lot of good things in corporate culture: Modi.

-We are promoting professionalism, rather than privilege: PM Modi on civil servants.

-Despite law and order being a state subject, interconnection among states is important from the security point of view: Modi.

-PM Modi says the government will bring schemes worth 100 lakh crore.

-There should not be any pressure on the citizen from the government: PM Modi.

-When tourism increases the poor gains the most: Modi.

-On merger of PSU banks, Modi said when his government showed the courage to merge banks and helped in recapitalisation. The banking sector has been made stronger than before.

-PM Modi assures bank officers that their business decisions will not be questioned. It is the responsibility of the government to address issues related to the banking sector.

-"I could have let things be like the previous governments, but I didn't," says Prime Minister.

-Corporate tax rate cut will promote investment, manufacturing in India: Modi

-The govt is working as an enabler, facilitator and promoter for making India a $5 trillion economy: Modi.

-We are moving forward with reform and perform

-We are working on connecting 15 crore households with piped water supply.

-We are now starting Jal Jeevan Mission

-When the future of 112 aspirational districts will improve, the future of India will also automatically improve.

-We are working on issues in aspirational districts: Modi

-Backward districts were left unattended by the past governments: Modi

-'Sabka saath, sabka vikas' led to our victory: Modi said.

-The repealing of Article 370 gave a ray of hope for the better future: Modi.

-The society doesn't want to remain stuck in the past, we are looking at the future: PM Modi.

-Ram Janmbhoomi dispute's solution paves the way for a better future of India, PM Modi said.

-"Conversation are a way forward for any society to move ahead. They provide the impetus to march forward," Modi said on HTLS 2019's theme.
