Tamil actor Vijay was being questioned by officers of the Income Tax Department in Neyveli of Cuddalore district in connection with an alleged tax evasion case linked to AGS Cinemas.
"Actor Vijay is being questioned in connection with an alleged tax evasion case linked to AGS Cinemas," said Income Tax officials. The AGS Cinemas had produced Vijay-starrer 'Bigil' last year. The incident halted the shooting of his upcoming movie Master, a Tamil-language action-thriller film written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
PTI quoted official sources that Income Tax sleuths have made a raid at his residence in Chennai.
Raids are being conducted at the properties of AGS Cinemas and film financier Anbu Cheliyan in Madurai since morning. The search operations were carried out at about 20 locations including the residence and office of Kalpathi S Aghoram, an AGS promoter, and at the screens owned by his group.
Hours after the development, the actor's fans, who call him as 'Thalapathy' (commander in Tamil), took to Twitter and started a hashtag #WestandwithVijay, which instantly became the top trend on Twitter India. Fans exuded exuded confidence their favourite actor will come out unscathed and that this is a mere general inquiry.
Vijay was questioned in connection with the payment received by him for film 'Bigil'.
