IMD issues heatwave alert for eastern India

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department on Monday (IMD) issued heatwave alert for Bihar, east Jharkhand and West Bengal and Sikkim, which will likely continue till Friday.
Heatwave conditions are also likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on Monday; over Telangana till Tuesday; over Vidarbha from Tuesday to Friday and over East Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday and Friday. A 4-6°C rise in maximum temperature has been forecast for northeast India during the next 24 hours, the weather bureau said.
A heatwave condition is declared when a district experiences temperature at least 5 degree Celsius more than normal temperature.
A gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-4°C is seen over plains of northwest India during the next five days. In central India, no significant change in maximum temperatures is seen for next two days, after which temperatures may rise by 2-3°C.
On Sunday, maximum temperatures ranged 40-42°C over many parts of central, east and north Peninsular India, some pockets of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Saurashtra. Eastern parts of Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim witnessed severe heatwaves on Sunday. It was the fifth day of heat wave conditions in these areas.
Meanwhile, the formation of a low-pressure area is likely over Southeast Arabian Sea by Tuesday which will turn into a depression in the next two days. As a result, Kerala, Lakshadweep and south interior Karnataka may receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds and scattered rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh during next five days.
IMD also sees heavy rainfall in some areas of Andaman and Nicobar Islands from Monday to Wednesday, in Lakshadweep and Kerala between Wednesday and Friday and over South Interior Karnataka on Wednesday.
Rainfall or thundershowers were observed at most places over Gujarat, in a few places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, South Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Konkan, Goa, Marathwada, Saurashtra, Kutch, Rayalaseema, coastal and north interior Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during 0830 IST on Sunday to 0830 IST Monday.
Heavy rainfall was observed at isolated places over west Madhya Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Maharashtra during the same period.
