IMD predicts severe heat wave, rise in maximum temperature in these areas. Details here

IMD issued a severe heat wave condition alert for the Saurashtra-Kutch, Konkan areas. They also predicted heat wave conditions over Coastal Karnataka, Southwest, Rajasthan and Gujarat region.

The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a severe heat wave condition alert for the Saurashtra-Kutch, Konkan areas. They also predicted heat wave conditions over Coastal Karnataka, Southwest, Rajasthan and Gujarat region.

The Indian Metrological Department further said that there is a a high probability that maximum temperatures will rise by 2-3°C over most parts of Northwest, Central and northeast India during next 3 days.

Yellow alert has been issued in for a heat wave in Gujarat region for next 2 days.

Yellow Alert in Gujarat

Manorama Mohanty, Director, MET Ahmedabad on Monday informed that a yellow alert had been sounded in Gujarat owing to the oncoming severe heat wave for the next two days. 

She also mentioned that the temperatures in Ahmedabad will rise up to 40-41° C. 

“Yellow alerts have been issued for a heat wave in Gujarat region for next 2 days. Temperature might rise around 1-2° C & a severe heat wave is expected in Saurashtra & Gujarat regions. Temperature in Ahmedabad is expected around 40-41° C", she said. 

 

 

 

Heat Wave alert issued

The IMD said that heat wave conditions to severe heat wave conditions were very likely to prevail in some parts of Saurashtra-Kutch and in isolated pockets over Konkan on 14-15 March.

They also mentioned that less than severe heat wave conditions would very likely prevail in isolated pockets of the region on 16 March.

Gujarat region and South west Rajasthan is will also witness heat wave conditions in isolated pockets from 14-16 March.

Similar condition will prevail over Coastal Karnataka from 14-15 March.

These conditions will remain the same thereafter, said the IMD's official statement.

East India will also see a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2-4°C during next 4-5 days. On the other hand, Gujarat and Maharashtra will see a fall in their maximum temperatures 2-3°C after three days.

The weather is likely to be dry for most parts of the country.

Rain in Southern India

South Interior Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and Kerala & Mahe are likely to receive light rainfall from 16 March to 18 March. Andaman and Nicobar Islands will also receive light rainfall from 14-18 March.

Strong Winds (speed reaching 25-35 kmph) likely to prevail over plains of Northwest India on 16- 17 March.

IMD predicts impact of heat wave

The weather department said that heat wave could lead to moderate health concern for vulnerable people especially infants, elderly, people with chronic diseases. They also warned about increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people who are either exposed to sun for a prolonged period or doing heavy work.

Precautionary measures

-Avoid heat exposure– keep cool. Avoid dehydration.

-Drink sufficient water- even if not thirsty.

-Avoid heat exposure, wear lightweight, light-colored, loose, cotton clothes and cover the head by use of cloth, hat or umbrella etc.

-Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, to keep yourself hydrated.
