Delhi Weather Highlights: 64 dead in Himachal since monsoon's onset; IMD warns of more rain till August 12

A man is feared to have died after he fell into a drain along a waterlogged road in southwest Delhi's Bijwasan area on Thursday, with rescue teams failing to trace him despite hours of search, PTI reported.

Since monsoon hit the state late in June, 64 people have died in rain-related incidents, including 14 landslides and one instance of flash flood, PTI reported.

Parts of eastern Rajasthan received moderate to heavy rainfall on Thursday, with isolated places recording very heavy showers, while western regions witnessed light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder, according to the Meteorological Department.

The IMD on Thursday forecast heavy rain in some places across West Bengal till August 7 owing to an active monsoon and favourable wind pattern.

The IMD on Thursday issued an orange alert forecasting heavy rainfall and strong winds in three Kerala districts even as floodwaters began receding in several affected areas, officials said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued the red alert for the day in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki districts at 1 pm.

Heavy rainfall lashed Shimla and several parts of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, disrupting normal life in the hill town as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast continued wet weather with heavy rain at isolated places across the state over the next several days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an alert for Uttar Pradesh, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next 24 hours as active monsoon conditions are expected to persist across the state for the next four to five days.

The flood situation in Keralam's Kuttanad region remains bad, with rising water levels damaging roads, villages and agricultural areas. It has affected thousands of residents, disrupting daily life.

Continuous inflow of water from the eastern regions has worsened flooding across several parts of Alappuzha district, submerging low-lying areas and making transportation increasingly difficult. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as water levels continue to rise.

Six members of a family, including two infants, were killed after a nearly century-old house collapsed during heavy rains in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district early Thursday, PTI reported.

Several rivers in Uttarakhand, including the Alaknanda, Mandakini and Bhagirathi, were flowing at or above warning and danger levels on Thursday following continuous rainfall, prompting authorities to issue alerts, suspend schools in three districts and ask officials to remain on high alert.

According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the Alaknanda at Rudraprayag was flowing at the danger level of 627 metres at 6 am and rising, while the Mandakini was recorded at 626.20 metres at 7 am, 0.20 metres above its danger level of 626 metres.

The Uttar Pradesh government has released financial assistance to the families of those who lost their lives in the recent rain-related tragedy in Pratapgarh, following directions issued by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Acting on the Chief Minister's instructions, the Pratapgarh District Magistrate handed over ₹4 lakh each to kin of the deceased. A total of ₹26.20 lakh has been disbursed as ex gratia assistance to the affected families as part of the state's immediate relief measures, ANI reported.

The impact of continuous heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand's hill districts was visible in Rishikesh on Thursday, with the Ganga flowing above the warning level at Triveni Ghat, prompting authorities to intensify evacuation and awareness drives along the riverbanks, news agency ANI reported.

IMD forecast: “Very heavy rainfall observed at isolated places over West uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra, Lakshadweep, Bihar and Mizoram and heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana,, East Uttar Prdaesh, Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, Odihsa, Jharkhand, Gangetic west Bengal and Assam & Meghalaya during 0830 hrs IST of yesterday to 0830 hrs IST of today, 06 August, 2026.”

Heavy rain continued to lash Delhi on Thursday morning, with the IMD extending its red alert for several parts of the Capital until the afternoon.

The IMD placed North East Delhi, Central Delhi, South East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi and Shahdara under a red alert till 2:25pm, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Amid heavy rains across the national capital, severe waterlogging seen at Sainik farms area of Delhi, causing disruptions to vehicular movement.

Gurugram Police said, “Traffic is being operated smoothly in most areas of the city. At places where traffic is slow due to waterlogging or other reasons, Gurugram Police teams are continuously working to normalize the traffic.”

Police said thet remains fully alert for your safety and smooth traffic even amidst heavy rain. “Despite the continuous heavy rain since morning, as per the instructions of the Police Commissioner, Gurugram, all station SHOs and police teams are deployed on the roads for traffic management. Citizens are requested to remain patient, follow traffic rules, and avoid unnecessary travel,” they said in a post on X.

Gurugram is under a yellow alert, where light rainfall is expected over the next few hours. Gurugram Police advised corporate offices to allow employees to work from home wherever possible.

"In view of the ongoing and anticipated heavy rainfall in Gurugram, there is a high likelihood of waterlogging and traffic congestion on the city's main roads and intersections. To ensure the safety of citizens, reduce unnecessary traffic load, and assist the local administration in traffic management, Gurugram Police issues this cautionary advisory," the police said in a statement.

Heavy rain lashed Dehradun on Wednesday evening after a sudden change in weather, causing waterlogging, traffic disruption, and slowing vehicle movement. The IMD has warned of heavy rainfall in several districts, and the administration is monitoring the situation.
