India has announced plans to resume visa services for certain categories amid a diplomatic crisis with Canada. The High Commission in Ottawa said that it would restore services for entry, business, medical and conference visas with effect from October 26. The development comes amid a brewing diplomatic crisis that had recently prompted the expulsion of more than 40 Canadian diplomats from New Delhi.
“The High Commission of India in Ottawa and its Consulates General in Toronto and Vancouver were constrained to suspend visa services temporarily because of safety and security considerations. After a considered review of the security situation that takes into account some recent Canadian measures in this regard, it has been decided to resume visa services...” the Indian authorities wrote in a press release.
Officials however clarified that emergency situations will 'continue to be addressed' by the High Commission and the Consulates General.
New Delhi had stopped issuing visas in Canada a few weeks ago citing concerns over the safety and security of its diplomats while going to work. Ties between the two countries have become increasingly strained in recent weeks after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau citied ‘credible intelligence’ to link Indian authorities to the killing of a Sikh separatist leader. India has vehemently denied the claim as ‘absurd’.
