Indian Air Force aircraft crashes in Chennai: Scattered debris caught on camera; check major IAF mishaps in 2025

An Indian Air Force Pilatus PC-7 trainer aircraft crashed near Tambaram in Chennai’s Chengalpattu district during a routine training mission. The pilot ejected safely before the crash.

A video shared by PTI shows debris scattered on the ground while locals gathered around the site. The Indian Air Force is expected to investigate the cause of the crash.

There have been multiple Indian Air Force plane crashes this year. Three of those crashes involved Jaguar fighter jets.

Mirage 2000 trainer aircraft crash in February

On 6 February, an Indian Air Force twin-seater Mirage 2000 trainer aircraft crashed in an agricultural field. It was near Sunari village in the Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh during a routine training sortie.

The jet took off from the Gwalior air base. Both pilots managed to eject safely and suffered only minor injuries before being airlifted to Gwalior for medical checks.

The aircraft experienced a technical issue mid-flight, resulting in the crash. It caught fire on impact, with debris scattered across the field. No civilian injuries or property damage were reported. Villagers helped one pilot soon after he had landed.

Jaguar fighter jet crash in March

On 7 March, A Jaguar fighter jet of the Indian Air Force crashed in a hilly forest area near Raipur Rani in Haryana during a routine training mission. The incident occurred around 3:45 PM, shortly after the aircraft took off from Ambala Airbase.

The pilot reported a system malfunction, steered the jet away from populated areas and then ejected safely. The aircraft fell in the Morni region near Baldwala village, causing no civilian injuries or property damage.

Rescue teams reached the spot quickly. The IAF ordered a Court of Inquiry to find the exact cause. This was the first of three Jaguar crashes in 2025.

Jaguar trainer aircraft crash in April

A twin-seater Jaguar trainer aircraft crashed on April 2, around 9.30 PM, during a routine night training mission near Suvarda village in Jamnagar district. The twin-pilot aircraft went down in an open agricultural field after a technical fault. The aircraft caught fire upon impact, but no civilian injuries were reported.

Flight Lieutenant Siddharth Yadav died from his injuries. Reports say he steered the aircraft away from homes and ensured his co-pilot could eject before attempting to eject himself.

The second pilot, Group Captain Manish Kumar Singh, survived with serious injuries. He was shifted from Jamnagar to a military hospital in Kirkee. An IAF inquiry is underway.

Jaguar trainer aircraft crash in July

On 9 July, a twin-seater Jaguar trainer aircraft of the Indian Air Force crashed in an agricultural field in Rajasthan’s Churu district. It was around midday. The jet had taken off from the Suratgarh air base and went down after a suspected technical malfunction.

Both pilots, Squadron Leader Lokendra Sindhu and Flight Lieutenant Rishi Raj Singh, died in the crash. No civilian property was damaged.

Police, emergency services, the Army and IAF helicopters reached the spot quickly. The IAF has ordered a court of inquiry. This was the third Jaguar crash of 2025.
