New Delhi: India reported 263 new covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, a consistently declining trend, according to the Union Health Ministry on Monday. The count of active cases has dwindled to 4,709. The country has reported over 44.9 million infections and 531,866 deaths in three years since the pandemic’s onset.

Hospital admissions are decreasing alongside falling case numbers, said health experts. Yet, they cautioned that elderly individuals and those with comorbidities remain susceptible to infection, urging them to take booster shots if not done already and adhere to covid-19 safety protocols.

The covid-19 variant, XBB.1.16, responsible for the recent cases, now encounters a populace developing hybrid immunity from vaccinations and natural infections. Scientists believe this widespread immunity is making current variants less severe and reducing hospitalizations.

Recoveries continue to rise, with about 445 million people recovering from the virus, including 571 in the last 24 hours, pushing the recovery rate to a promising 98.80%.

The health ministry has asked states and Union Territories to adopt a risk-based approach to prevent and contain the spread of the virus. Emphasis has been placed on micro-level analysis of the covid situation in districts and sub-districts, maintaining a focus on effective compliance and management.

The national vaccination campaign continues to make strides. Over 220.66 crore doses have been administered countrywide, with about 500 doses delivered in the past 24 hours.

The trajectory of new covid cases is consistently falling as the country has reported 263 new covid cases in the last 24 hours, the union health ministry said on Monday. Besides this, the number of active cases has declined to 4709. In the last three years of the pandemic, India has reported to more than 44.9 million cases and 531866 covid related deaths.

Health experts say that the number of hospital admissions has also come down with lesser number of covid cases being reported. However, people who are elderly and have comorbid conditions are still vulnerable to catch infection. Furthermore, doctors have recommended such people to take their booster dose if not done yet and follow covid appropriate behavior.

It may be noted that the XBB.1.16 is the covid-19 variant which was responsible for the surge in the last few months. In addition to this, scientists say that people in India have developed hybrid immunity (due to vaccination and natural infection), therefore, the present covid-19 variants will not be able cause hospitalization and severity as it is mild in nature.

Around 4.45 crore people recovered from the infection with 571 patients recovered int the last 24 hours. The current recovery rate touching 98.80%.

Meanwhile, the union health ministry directed the state/UT government to follow a risk assessment-based approach to prevent and contain the infection. The health ministry advised to the state governments to examine the situation of covid-19 at micro level (district &sub-districts) and maintain focus on implementation of necessary measures for prompt and effective management of covid-19 duly ensuring effective compliance.

The government has asked the states to follow the five-fold strategy, i.e., Test-Track Treat-Vaccination strategy. Around 44,812 tests were conducted in a day taking the total number of tests to 92.93 crore.

Under the covid vaccination drive, more than 220.66 crore vaccine doses have been administered to the people across the country so far. In the last 24 hours, around 500 vaccine doses were administered.
