New Delhi: India recorded 206 new cases of covid-19 on Tuesday, a significant decrease from a peak of 13,000 cases in April, the Union health ministry reported. The number of active cases has also dwindled to 4,503.
Since the start of the pandemic three years ago, India has seen over 44.9 million cases and 531,867 deaths linked to the virus. However, health experts have observed a decrease in hospital admissions as case numbers continue to drop. Those who are older or have pre-existing conditions, though, remain susceptible and are advised to receive a booster dose.
The recent surge was attributed to the covid variant XBB.1.16. Scientists believe that hybrid immunity, achieved through both vaccination and natural infection, is prevalent in the Indian population. This immunity is likely to limit the impact of current variants, which are considered mild in nature and are less likely to cause severe disease or hospitalization.
India’s recovery rate is currently at 98.80%, with around 445 million people having recovered from the virus, including 429 patients in the past day alone.
In a response to the evolving situation, the Union Health Ministry urged local governments to adopt a risk-assessment based approach to prevent further spread of the virus. It recommended micro-level assessments of the situation and the continued implementation of key preventative measures, such as testing, tracking, treating, and vaccination.
The government has conducted 98,167 tests in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of tests to nearly 929.3 million. The country’s vaccination program continues to make progress, with over 2.21 billion doses administered nationwide, including 1,695 in the last 24 hours.
