New Delhi: The fourth edition of the Indo-Indonesia bilateral exercise Samudra Shakti-23 concluded in the South China Sea, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
The sea phase, which took place from 17 to 19 May 2023, witnessed the participation of ASW corvette INS Kavaratti with an integral Chetak helicopter and a Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft of the Indian Navy.
KRI Sultan Iskandar Muda with an integral helicopter Panther and a CN 235 Maritime Patrol Aircraft participated in the exercise from the Indonesian Navy.
“A series of complex exercises including tactical manoeuvres, weapon firings, helicopter operations, Air defence and Anti-Submarine warfare exercises were undertaken that enhanced interoperability between the two navies,” the ministry said.
Before the sea phase, the exercise kicked off with a fruitful harbour phase that fostered valuable professional interactions, table-top exercises, and sports exchanges between the naval units.
“The successful completion of Exercise Samudra Shakti-23, illustrated the strong partnership between India and Indonesia and reaffirmed the commitment of both navies to promote peace and stability in the region through cooperative engagements,” it added.
India, and Indonesia established diplomatic relations in 1951. Both countries are neighbours, India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Indonesia along the Andaman Sea.
Relationship between Indian-Indonesian dates back to almost two millennia. India had established an embassy in Jakarta while Indonesia is having an embassy in Delhi. India considers Indonesia as a key member of ASEAN. Both the countries are among the largest democracies of world. They are member states of G-20, E7 (countries), United Nations and Non-aligned Movement.
