Manmohan Singh's death: The Karnataka government declared a public holiday for schools, colleges, and offices today to mourn the demise of former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday. The union government has announced seven days of national mourning as a mark of respect to the former PM.
Soon after the announcement of the government holiday in Karnataka, speculations began about whether Friday, December 27, would also be a school and bank holiday in other states.
Today is a public holiday in Karnataka, as per the state government announcement, to mourn the demise of former prime minister Manmohan Singh.
There will be a holiday today in Telangana, after the Revanth Reddy-led government announced closure of government offices and educational institutions on Friday, News18 reported. Mint couldn't independently verify the news. In Delhi, CM Atishi has cancelled all her government programmes.
All government programs will be cancelled on Friday, and the Union Cabinet is likely to meet at 11 a.m. today, The Economic Times reported, citing sources.
During the national mourning period over former PM Manmohan Singh's death, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast at all locations. Additionally, there will be no official state mourning on the morning of 26 December to 1 January (both days included). There is no official announcement on public holiday by the central government.
According to RBI's holiday calendar, the Kohima region in Nagaland will have a bank holiday for the Christmas celebration. However, it is unclear whether the banks will be shut on Friday, December 27.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92 at AIIMS, Delhi, on Thursday evening. He succumbed to his age-related health conditions after he reportedly lost consciousness at home, ANI reported.
Confirming former PM Manmohan's death, AIIMS said in a press release, “With profound grief, we inform the demise of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, aged 92. He was being treated for age-related medical conditions and had sudden loss of consciousness at home on 26th December 2024. Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to the Medical Emergency at AIIMS, New Delhi at 8:06 PM. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.”
