Kangana Ranaut has agreed to make cuts to ’Emergency’ movie amid row

Amid the ongoing row over the release of ‘Emergency’ movie, lead actress Kangana Ranaut has agreed to make cuts to the film based on the life of former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) told Bombay High Court on Monday.

According to Bar and Bench, a website tracking legal news, the CBFC on Monday informed the Bombay HC that Ranaut, who is the co-producer and lead actress of the movie, has agreed to the cuts suggested by the CBFC's Revising Committee to the movie.

The Bombay HC Bench of Justices BP Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla heart the Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited v Central Board of Film Certification Films Division Complex case on September 30.

The Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi had communicated her acceptance of the proposed cuts, Senior Advocate Sharan Jagtiani, representing Zee, informed the court during Monday's hearing,

Bombay HC adjourns the case till October 3

Bombay HC adjourned the case hearing till October 3 to allow both parties to seek proper instructions. After agreeing to making the suggested changes, the movie makers will submit a format for the implementation of the changes suggested by CBFC.

Emergency movie controversy

Earlier the CBFC had issued nearly 13 cuts and changes to the film and passed the content with a UA certificate. The certificate for its theatrical release was supposed to be issued after the implementation of the suggested changes to the movie.

The list of suggested cuts includes a few violent scenes and and a reference to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale as 'saint or sant' in a dialogue. The biographical drama landed in controversy after some Sikh organisations including the Shiromani Akali Dal objected, accusing it of misrepresenting the community and getting historical facts wrong.

During the previous hearing of the case on September 25, the CBFC had told Bombay HC that the movie would get the certificate if certain cuts are mare, as recommended by its revising committee.

The movie, which was initially slated for a September 6 release, has been embroiled in a battle with the censor board for non-issuance of certificate for release of the movie.
