BENGALURU: Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday said he will donate his entire year's salary for the battle against the novel coronavirus (covid-19).

“I will donate my one year’s salary to the chief minister's relief fund covid-19," he said in a video message posted on micro-blogging and social networking website Twitter.

He also appealed to ministers, legislators, parliamentarians and other officials to donate as much as possible to help fight with the virus that has so far left three dead and infected 101 persons in Karnataka alone.

The chief minister's gesture comes amid calls by Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking citizens to donate to his relief fund PM-CARES to combat the outbreak in the country.

The 77-year old chief minister has appealed to all citizens to contribute to the cause in whatever capacity possible.

Bengaluru Urban and Mysuru have emerged as some of the biggest covid-19 hotspots in the country.

“Bengaluru Urban and Mysuru are featuring among the top 25 hotspots in the country. Chikkaballapura has emerged as a hotspot in the last 14 days. Bengaluru is also among top 7 cities with high case load," said Pankaj Kumar Pandey, commissioner, health, family welfare and Ayush services for Karnataka government.

Bengaluru accounts for 45 of the total 101 confirmed cases in the state so far. This includes seven people who have recovered and discharged from the hospital.

Mysuru has seen its numbers rise in the last few days after a 35-year old executive at a pharmaceutical company tested positive. So far, 10 contacts that can be traced to this executive have tested positive and another 1,000 people from his company are under home quarantine. Chikkaballpura has nine cases so far.

Authorities in the state have already traced around 78 people who were part of a group that attended the Tablighi Jamaat, a religious congregation in Delhi. They are still tracking another 300.

A 60-year old from Tumakuru in Karnataka, who is directly related to this congregation, died last week due to the virus.
