The Karnataka government has hiked electricity prices by 2.89 per unit for those above ‘free’ 200-unit slab. CM Siddaramaiah-led Congress government had on Monday announced that Karnataka would implement the ‘Gruha Jyoti scheme’ under which free electricity below 200 units every month will be distributed to all households. It will be implemented from 1 July.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said tenants are also eligible to avail the ‘Gruha Jyoti’ scheme, under which 200 units of free power will be provided to all domestic consumers in the state from 1 July.

“We will provide free power (up to 200 units) to those living in rented accommodation as well. Poor people who consume less than 200 units of power will not have to pay the bills. This (scheme) will be applicable to the tenants," Siddaramaiah told reporters here. He also clarified that this scheme was not applicable for commercial usage.

The 'Gruha Jyoti' scheme was one of the 5 guarantees promised by the Congress ahead of the 2023 assembly elections. The recent guidelines have been issued by the Karnataka Energy Department, under which, it noted that the free power supply will be dependent on the monthly average consumption of a household and will be capped at 200 units.

The CM had on Monday said, "We are offering free electricity to help the poor and middle-class people of the State who are in distress. We have allowed 10% more free electricity consumption than the average consumption in a year. This has been accepted and welcomed by the people of the State."

Talking about the electricity tarriff hike by 2.89 per unit, Siddaramaiah said the decision was not taken by the government but the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC). "We do not decide hike in electricity tariff. There is Karnataka electricity regulatory authority, which has decided. It had decided in the past. We have only implemented it," he explained.

The Karnataka Chief Minister had on Monday also announced that the state government would table their budget on 7 July, 2023.

Notably, the opposition Bhartiya Janata party (BJP) has protested the hike in electricity tariff by the Karnataka government.
