With the BJP stunning ruling LDF and the Congress-led UDF to storm into the city civic body, the big question has emerged-- will Kerala's first woman IPS officer also become the saffron party's maiden Mayor from here.
Just days to go for her to turn 65, the spotlight is on R Sreelekha to see if the BJP picks her to lead the city corporation that was a Left fortress for over four decades, before being breached by the saffron party in the just concluded local body polls.
The counting of votes polled in the two-phased elections, held earlier this week, was taken up on Saturday.
Winning from the Sasthamangalam division of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, Sreelekha has been projected as the face of the BJP-led NDA for the mayoral post, a key priority for the saffron party which put up an impressive show in a state dominated by Congress and Left led blocs for decades.
Responding to reporters' queries, she thanked voters for the verdict.
"I have come to know that no candidate has secured such a lead in the Sasthamangalam ward before....we thank the people for the verdict,” she said.
Asked about the possibility of becoming the Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, she said that the party would decide on the matter.
The lotus bloomed in the state capital on Saturday as the BJP-led NDA achieved a resounding win in the polls for the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, snatching it from the CPI(M)-led LDF and marking an end to 45 years of continuous Left rule in the local body. Of the 101 wards in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, the BJP won 50, LDF 29, UDF 19 and two by independent candidates, news agency PTI reported.
On Kerala Local Body Elections result, CPI(M) State Secretary MV Govindan said, “The LDF has suffered an unexpected setback. A detailed review will be conducted at all levels and necessary corrections will be made. The LDF in Kerala has a history of moving forward by making timely course corrections, and it had effectively overcome the defeat of 2010. There has been no fundamental erosion in the base of the Left Democratic Front. The UDF contested the elections by aligning with communal forces. There were instances where UDF votes went to the BJP and BJP votes were transferred to defeat the LDF. Despite claims of a BJP victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, the party failed to make significant gains elsewhere. The LDF has won the Pandalam Municipality, which includes key centres linked to Sabarimala. In the previous local body elections, the LDF had secured a massive victory, and the state government has delivered unparalleled achievements to Kerala. Why these achievements did not translate into electoral gains needs to be examined. Possible organisational shortcomings will also be reviewed in detail. The party will reach out more to the people and move forward. By analysing the setbacks in the elections and making necessary corrections, the LDF will overcome this phase. If there was strong anti-LDF sentiment, how could the front have won seven district panchayats?”

At the same time, Tharoor acknowledged the BJP's breakthrough in the state capital. He congratulated the party on its "historic performance" and "significant victory" in the Thiruvananthapuram city corporation, calling it a notable shift in the capital's political landscape. We always attacked LDF for their corruption and mal-governance, while Congress is in alliance with the CPI(M) in 27 states and 8 Union Territories, so it should not mislead the people... We do not want any endorsement from corrupt twins like the Congress and the Left... I am very proud to be a part of this party (BJP)..."
