Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra released a statement on Monday night saying ‘he will not apologise’ for his ‘gaddar’ comments about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde but he is ready to co-operate with legal authorities.
Following the political debates all through Monday, Kamra issued statement late Monday night, saying "I will not apologise... I don't fear this mob & I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down,"
Kamra added that his statement was exactly what "Mr. Ajit Pawar (1st deputy CM) said about Mr. Eknath Shinde (2nd Deputy CM)".
"Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change the nature of my right. As far as I know, it is not against the law to poke fun at our leaders and the circus that is our political system. However, I am willing to cooperate with the police and courts for any lawful action taken against me.
"But will the law be fairly and equally deployed against those who have decided that vandalism is the appropriate response to being offended by a joke?"
On Shiv Sena member vandalising Habitat Studio, he said, “An entertainment venue is merely a platform. A space for all sorts of shows. Habitat (or any other venue) is not responsible for my comedy, nor does it have any power or control over what I say or do. Neither does any political party. Attacking a venue for a comedian's words is as senseless as overturning a lorry carrying tomatoes, because you didn't like the butter chicken you were served”
A defiant Kamra also said those busy leaking his number on social media or calling him incessantly should know that it all goes to his voicemail where they will be subjected to "the very song" that they hate.
Kamra statement received huge support from the entire influencer tribe.
Lauding him, fellow stand up comedian Dhruv Rathee said, ‘This is real 56 inch courage’
Actress Mini Mathur responded saying ‘guts’
“Love u brother”, “Waiting for part 2”, “He proved that he isn’t from the sorryvarkar clan. Good job Kamra Bhai.” - are some of the comment he received from his influencer friends.
The 36-year-old comedian sparked a major controversy in Maharashtra for taking a jibe at Shinde's political career in his show by modifying the lyrics of a popular Hindi movie song. The joke referenced Eknath Shinde's 2022 split from Uddhav Thackeray to form a rival faction of Shiv Sena.
