India's top wrestlers on Saturday night met Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They demanded an early chargesheet against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, according to media reports.
During the meeting, Shah listened to protesting wrestlers until late in the first high-level intervention into the ongoing protest against the WFI chief.
Amit Shah is said to have assured the wrestlers that the law remains the same for everyone, the report added.
The meeting came days after the wrestlers went to Haridwar to immerse their medals in the Ganga River. However, farmer's leader Rakesh Tikait stopped them and gave an ultimatum to the central government for Brij Bhushan's arrest before June 9.
The protesting wrestlers earlier had a conversation with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur who assured a fair probe into their allegations against the BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh.
Meanwhile, the Ayodhya district administration has denied permission to BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to hold a maha rally here on June 5. Singh has been accused of sexually abusing female grapplers.
Singh said that the Ayodhya event - 'Jan Chetna Maharally' at the Ram Katha Park - has been postponed for a few days, in view of an ongoing probe into wrestlers' allegations against him.
Two FIR filed against him said Brij Bhushan Singh allegedly groped women athletes, asked inappropriate personal questions, demanded sexual favors to back their careers, brushed his hands across a minor's breast, and stalked her.
However, Singh has denied all charges and earlier this week, he issued a statement, once again refuting all allegations of sexual misconduct.
"If a single allegation against me is proven, I will hang myself. If you (wrestlers) have any evidence, present it to the Court, and I am ready to accept any punishment," he said.
After prominent wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, came forward with allegations of sexual harassment against the WFI chief.
Wrestling Federation of India assistant secretary Vinod Tomar is also named as an accused in the FIR filed in the matter. The movement has gained traction, with leading Opposition leaders also supporting the grapplers.
