Lost your luggage at the airport? Here's what you should do

  • If you are a frequent flyer, you know how it feels when your luggage does not arrive at your destination
  • If you ever lose your precious bag while travelling, here are three things that you need to keep in your mind

Last week, IndiGo was in the news as the budget airline's Delhi-Istanbul flights were taking off without checked-in luggage of most of its passengers for two days.

If you are a frequent flyer, you know how it feels when your luggage does not arrive at your destination. This happens more often than not when you are hopping in between two connecting flights. If you ever lose your precious bag while travelling, here are three things that you need to keep in your mind.

1) If you find that your luggage is missing, the first thing that you must do is to file a complaint. A traveller needs to file a passenger irregularity report (PIR) at airline's desk available at the airport. Along with the detailed description of the luggage, a traveller needs to fill up the local address and contact information. Don't forget to get your claim number and a copy of the missing baggage report. One can track the missing luggage's status on airline's website by mentioning the claim number. If you are taking multiple flights, you have to report to the airline whose flight you took last.

2) Once the report is filed, the airline is supposed trace your luggage and have to delivered at your mentioned address. If the airline cannot find your luggage within 21 days, it is considered as a lost item. In such cases, a passenger has to make a new claim with the airline, mentioning all the lost items and their prices along with the purchase dates.

3) On Air India, if a luggage is delayed beyond 24 hours when a traveller is on an international trip, a one-time interim expense of 50 British pounds will be provided by the airline. In India, this amount is 3,000. On domestic flights, if the entire checked-in baggage is delivered the following day or later, Air India will reimburse a maximum amount of 2,000.
