The price of non-subsidised LPG cylinder has been cut with effect from today, in line with a decline in global rates. In Delhi, a 14.2 kg non-subsidised LPG cylinder will cost 805, down from 858 in the previous month. After the latest price revision, a cylinder in Kolkata will cost 839, in Mumbai 776.5 and in Chennai 826. Domestic LPG price is based on the international market price for the previous month.

Every household is entitled to 12 cylinders of 14.2 kg each at subsidised rates in a year. LPG price for cooking for consumers under PAHAL (Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG) is subsidised by the Union Government and the subsidy quantum given to them is the difference between the market-determined price and the subsidised price.

Any requirement beyond that is to be purchased at market price.

Fuel retailers revise prices of LPG cylinders every month. The price of LPG cylinders in India is dependent primarily on two factors - the international benchmark rate of LPG and the exchange rate of US dollar and rupee.

Last month, the government had sharply hiked prices of non-subsidised LPG cylinder by 145 to 858.5 in New Delhi. To insulate LPG consumers from the volatility of LPG prices in the international market, the government had increased the subsidy amount from 153.86 per cylinder to 291.48 per cylinder.

For the PMUY or Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana consumers, the subsidy was increased from 174.86 per cylinder to 312.48 per cylinder.

In Budget 2020, the government increased the allocation for providing subsidised fuel, especially LPG and kerosene, by 6% to 40,915.21 crore for the next fiscal.

The allocation for LPG subsidy has been increased to 37,256.21 crore for the next fiscal from the revised estimate of 34,085.86 crore for the current year. (With Agency Inputs)
