A group of upper caste villagers in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district pelted stones on a wedding procession after a Dalit groom sat on a mare for performing the marriage rituals. The stone pelting ended up in several people getting injured, including some police personnel.

"There was a wedding ceremony in the Dalit community in the district in which the groom was to perform a ritual by sitting on a mare. The people belonging to other communities (referring to upper caste people) protested the act. There was a possibility of a dispute, due to which the police force was already deployed in the village," Chhatarpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Amit Sanghi told ANI.

The reports said that the groom and his family were returning from the rituals of Devi Pujan and were under police protection when some people started pelting stones at the family. The upper caste villagers raised objections to the ritual in which the groom had to take rounds of the village and visit the temple.

The senior police officer said that a case has been registered under relevant sections against 20 named and 30 unknown persons and the search operation for the accused is on.

"Despite the presence of the police, the matter of stone pelting on a wedding procession of a Scheduled Caste groom is very serious in the Chhatarpur district. Although later the procession was taken out under police protection, it is a matter of concern why such a thing is being seen again and again in Madhya Pradesh," former Chief Minister Kamal Nath said.

In another case of caste atrocity, villagers in the Patan district of Gujarat chopped off the thumb of a Dalit man after his nephew picked up a ball during a cricket match at the school playground. The police said that some people objected to the boy picking up the ball and used caste slurs against him.

When Dhiraj Parmar objected to the caste slurs against his nephew, the matter became serious, but soon a settlement was reached. Later, around 7 men attacked Dhiraj Parmar and his brother Kirti with sharp objects and chopped off Kirti's thumb.

The police have registered FIRs under relevant sections and said that they will arrest the accused soon.
